Shula Burger - Fort Lauderdale, FL

Wine Country

Shula Burger is one of the newer burger franchises in South Florida, boasting the iconic name of NFL Hall Of Fame Coach Don Shula of the Miami Dolphins to help bring hungry guests through their doors. They offer wine and beers, encouraging you to come watch the game, have a drink and fill you bellies at the same time. With all this in mind, I was excited to try this place out as I've been hearing people talk about it with high remarks. Finally, I gathered up a couple buddies and just headed out there to do the damn thing.

Burger - Wine Country $7.99 - Roasted peppers, fresh goat cheese, balsamic greens, roasted tomatoes
I decided to go outside of my comfort zone with this pick. I felt like doing something different and not my normal mushroom or caramelized onion burger. Shula Burger's are a mix of Premium Black Angus Beef, short rib, and brisket. The patty was grilled and cooked to a warm pink medium center. Most places don't do this. Most places stick to the cooked through grey of well done. But somehow even with the nice pink color and interesting beef blend it lacked the juiciness you expect from a great burger. The beefiness doesn't punch you in the mouth, but you get more of a grill flavor smack in the face. When it came to dressing up this thing, the balsamic greens and goat cheese was a nice touch, but the roasted red peppers were tasteless and forgettable. The brioche bun, which bared the seared in Shula stamp of approval, was soft and buttery. Overall it just didn't live up to my standards of a really awesome burger.

Side - Sea Salt Fries $2.49
The fries were just ok. I stole a couple Sweet Potato Tots from my friends plate and they were much better; crunchy on the outside, pillowy soft on the inside! Definitely go with these.

Drink - Chocolate Milkshake $4.29

Milkshakes are made with Haagen Dazs ice cream, which is a favorite of mine. They top it off with whip cream and serve it nice and thick.

Conclusion: Next time I would go with a normal cheeseburger and make sure not to forget the Sweet Potato Fries and milkshake. This place may get a great following because of the Shula name, but it did not deliver compared to what you have to pay for it.

  1. I had higher hopes for this burger. I've tried the French Onion and a standard cheeseburger and both were cooked past the stated medium and a bit too salty. Sweet tots are a must.
